Hornby’s 2015 novel follows Barbara Parker, a young, working British woman in the 1960s who moves to London to pursue her dreams of becoming an actress. In a starred review, a critic wrote, “Hornby makes the reader care for his characters as much as he does and retains a light touch with the deeper social implications, as women, popular entertainment and the culture in general experience social upheaval.”
Arterton will play Barbara Parker in the series, which will air on the British network Sky networks. The actress first gained fame with her role in the 2008 James Bond movie Quantum of Solace; she’s also starred in films like Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
The series will be directed by Oliver Parker (Swimming With Men) and written by Morwenna Banks (Up the Women, Damned). Arterton, Hornby, and Banks are among the show’s executive producers, along with Gail Egan, Andrea Calderwood, Jessica Malik, and Jessica Parker.
“It’s a heart-warming story of an ambitious woman with a dream of making people laugh—it’s going to be something special,” Arterton told Variety. “It’s an honor to be working with such an incredible team and be reunited with my first ever director, Oliver Parker.”
